5 tips for growing rosemary on the balcony

Rosemary is one of the most useful and versatile plants in the  kitchen  . Its unmistakable soap and aroma make it a fundamental ingredient in a myriad of different preparations, both meat and fish.

Not to mention its health benefits and therapeutic properties:  rosemary is a truly excellent plant  and for this reason it should never be missing in our homes.

The best thing about rosemary is that it is an extremely hardy plant and can be easily planted at home and kept on the balcony. Below we list  5 tips for growing rosemary on the balcony and always have a lush plant  .

  • Rosemary soil needs to be very well-drained: the plant does not tolerate excess moisture. Make sure your pot has adequate drainage and use gravel or clay pebbles under the layer of soil.
Allow the soil to dry out completely between waterings. To make sure you are not overwatering, try sticking your finger into the soil. Sometimes, although it may appear dry on the surface, the soil is actually completely damp, so it is best to wait a little longer before watering the plant.
  • Although rosemary is quite resistant to insect and fungal attacks, it is certainly not exempt from them. To protect the plant, prepare a chamomile infusion and spray it all over the plant, paying particular attention to the lower part.
  • Rosemary does not need fertilizer and grows in any type of soil. However, a quality soil can only do the plant good. The plant tolerates heat and cold well, but the ideal condition for its growth is a temperate climate. Protect your plant from excessive climates by perhaps placing it indoors.
  • When you need to cut sprigs of rosemary from your plant for use in cooking, it is best to cut small branches from different areas of the plant.
Cutting more than 1/3 of the plant at a time could cause permanent damage.
  • You probably already know that rosemary can be planted by cuttings: this method is the easiest and fastest way to have your own rosemary seedling.
To implement this method, look for a lush rosemary shrub and cut a branch of your choice, which should be at least 10 centimeters long. Make the cut diagonally and remove the leaves that are lower down to encourage the roots to grow.
Place the cuttings in a container with water and wait for the roots to form.
