There are more fertilizers you can make yourself than you might imagine, and they offer nothing but benefits! Discover simple, effective, and natural recipes for a spectacular garden.
Making your own fertilizers is a trendy idea: it’s smart, economical, and above all, environmentally friendly. Of course, synthetic fertilizers (mineral or chemical) are responsible for various types of pollution during their production and use. But above all, it makes no sense to buy fertilizer when in a garden we have everything at our fingertips, even the smallest. The nutrients consumed by cultivated plants end up in various ways in our daily lives. It costs nothing and there is a real benefit for the plants because homemade fertilizers have an advantage: they create few deficiencies, they themselves contain trace elements, those substances that plants need in minimal quantities.

There are several natural fertilizers
Homemade fertilizers can take several forms. Compost and extracts (slurry, maceration, etc.) are the two main ones, but there are others. If you have the opportunity to collect seaweed from a fishmonger (an increasingly rare opportunity) or manure from a pony club or farm, you can do a lot of things. Other organic waste such as cider apple pressing residue, feathers collected from a poultry farmer, grain threshing residue (bran, chaff)… are all sources not to be overlooked. In short, browse, look around you: there is definitely that ideal and free fertilizer waiting for you!

DIY fertilizers fall into the organic category. They are weak fertilizers (compared to synthetic fertilizers), but their formulation is suitable for virtually all crops.
The best time to make your own fertilizers is in the fall, so the materials can decompose by winter, but they can also be applied any time of year.
No matter the size of your garden, think big. Due to the decomposition of organic matter, homemade fertilizers lose a large portion of their initial volume. So, budget a large sum at the beginning, because in the end, you’ll only get less than 10% of that volume, or even 30 times less!
