How to Recover Felted Wool
It can happen to anyone to do laundry and, once collected, notice a finished wool garment among the clothes intended for hot washing. Although it may seem tragic, there are tricks that allow us to recover felted garments .
First of all, you should avoid doing what is often done almost instinctively, that is, trying to “stretch” the garment with your hands. This does not work: the fiber of the fabric will break and the garment will be ruined forever.
First tip for recovering felted wool clothes
All you need is a basin, some water, and some baby shampoo. Fill the basin with cold water and add two tablespoons of baby shampoo. If you don’t have it, you can try using regular laundry softener or hair conditioner.
Soak the felted garment and mix well to soak all the fibers of the fabric. Let the garment soak for 30 minutes, then remove it from the basin and remove the excess water without squeezing it too much. It should remain damp, but not soggy.
Lay the garment out on a dry towel and roll it up to absorb excess water. Place the garment on another dry towel and slowly stretch it in each area to “expand” it. You can do this several times, until it returns to its original size.
Dry it directly on a towel, but in the open air and away from heat sources.
Second tip for lengthening felted clothes
To do this trick, you need baking soda and vinegar. Mix 20 grams of baking soda in a liter of hot water, then pour this solution into a bowl filled with warm water. Immerse the garment in the basin and stretch it little by little.
Keep the garment in the basin for about 1 hour, then rinse it in another basin with one litre of water at room temperature and 250 ml of white vinegar. Leave the garment to dry on a flat surface without wringing it out.
Third tip for saving a wool or felted cotton garment
To recover your hair with this trick, pour 125 ml of white vinegar and 50 ml of hair mask into a container filled with hot water. The garment must be completely submerged in the solution. Let it soak for 30 minutes.
Then, stretch all areas of the garment slightly, then soak it again in the solution for 1 hour and wash it cold.
