Turmeric is a yellow spice obtained from the rhizome of a plant in the ginger family. Also known as Indian saffron, turmeric is an important component of curry. Native to India, this seasoning plant can be planted from February to May. To grow in a pot, first place a layer of clay pebbles or gravel at the bottom of the pot to facilitate drainage. Then fill the pot with a mixture of organic potting soil and river sand, and plant the rhizomes. Keep the pot in a bright location, but avoid direct sunlight. This can dry out your plant. I prefer partial shade instead. Water turmeric regularly but not excessively. Also, be sure to remove any standing water in the saucer or pot to prevent root rot and allow the substrate to dry out between waterings. Once a month, fertilize your plant with a special fertilizer for houseplants.
