Ginger may have contraindications if consumed with certain medications prescribed for health conditions such as diabetes, hypertension, or blood problems.

Blood-thinning medications . Ginger thins the blood, making it less thick. If you are taking blood-thinning medications or have a bleeding disorder, you should consult your doctor before consuming ginger.

Diabetes medications . Ginger may be helpful in lowering blood sugar and is often cited as a natural remedy for type 2 diabetes. However, people with diabetes (or prediabetes) who are taking medication or insulin injections should consult their doctor before consuming ginger to avoid low blood sugar levels.

Hypertension medications . Some medications used to control high blood pressure can interact with ginger, making your blood pressure and heart rate too low. If you are taking high blood pressure medication, consult your doctor first.

Gallstones . People who suffer from these conditions may worsen their condition by consuming ginger. Large amounts of ginger can increase the production of bile, which concentrates in the gallbladder, thus paving the way for stones.

Pregnancy . Ginger consumption during pregnancy is controversial, and there is a lot of evidence to support this. Some studies suggest that ginger can be safely consumed to relieve morning sickness, while others link a risk of bleeding to the consumption of this herb, especially in the later months.

The recommended dose of ginger for people without any medical conditions is 4 grams per day.
