Grandma’s Secret to Keep Wool Sweaters Flawless Without Additives

With the simple use of warm water, white vinegar and a few precautions, your wool sweaters will remain soft and as good as new for years. Forget chemical additives and rely on traditional natural remedies!

Keeping wool sweaters soft and in tip-top condition may seem like a challenge, but thanks to a simple trick passed down from grandmothers, you can prevent them from getting ruined without resorting to expensive chemical additives. This natural method is easy, economical and respectful of the environment.

Grandma’s trick

To prevent wool sweaters from shrinking, losing softness or felting, the secret is all in white vinegar and the right washing technique. Here’s how:

Preparation :

  1. Before washing, gently shake sweaters to remove any dust or surface lint.
  2. Be sure to close buttons or zippers on other items to prevent them from catching on the wool.

Hand wash :

  1. Fill a basin with lukewarm water (never hot!).
  2. Add half a cup of white vinegar, which softens the fibers and prevents felting.
  3. Submerge the sweater and let it soak for 10-15 minutes, gently massaging the fibers.

Gentle rinse :

Empty the basin and rinse the sweater with cold water, avoiding twisting it to avoid deforming it.

Perfect drying :

  1. Lay the sweater out on a dry towel and roll it up to remove excess water.
  2. Next, let the garment dry flat, away from direct heat sources or sunlight.

Why does it work?

White vinegar is a natural remedy that protects wool fibers, keeping them soft and flexible. It does not leave unpleasant odors, on the contrary, it neutralizes any bad odors.

Other wool care tips

Store them carefully : fold sweaters and store them in drawers or boxes with cedar-scented sachets to protect them from moths.

Avoid the washing machine : Even on delicate cycles, movement can damage sweaters.

Do not use fabric softeners : these products can weigh down wool fibres.
