Cleaning and disinfecting a mattress may seem like a daunting task, but it really isn’t if you follow the right methods. You can clean and disinfect your mattress, eliminating dust mites and stains quickly and with ingredients you probably already have at home.
Having a clean mattress is very important for our health. Mites and bacteria that accumulate on the mattress are in constant contact with our skin, and sometimes we even end up inhaling them, which is harmful for people with diseases such as asthma or allergies.
You don’t need a vacuum to deep clean a mattress. Do a deep manual cleaning with DIY products at least twice a year. Follow these simple steps to do it.
- Remove the bedspreads and sheets and shake the mattress to remove any debris that has accumulated there.
- Mix one tablespoon of laundry detergent with one gallon of cold water until it suds.
- Apply the foam to the mattress and rub the entire surface with a sponge, especially the stains.
- Let the mattress dry, if possible, in the sun, or use a hair dryer.
Removing Stains with Baking Soda
If you have a particularly old mattress, it will probably also be stained. Moisture and dirt can cause brown stains that are difficult to remove. Below, we’ll show you how to remove them with baking soda.
- Mix 1 part baking soda with 2 parts cold water.
- Apply to mattress stains and leave for 30 minutes.
- Use a damp cloth to remove the baking soda, then let it dry thoroughly, preferably in the sun.
- Finally, vacuum to remove any baking soda residue.
How to clean and disinfect a mattress with vinegar
If there are sweat or pee stains on the mattress, it is advisable to use vinegar to clean and disinfect it thoroughly.
- Dampen a clean cloth with liquid soap and water.
- Fill a bucket with 2 parts warm water and 1 part white vinegar, then rub directly onto the stains.
- Let dry well.
Vinegar helps kill mold and bacteria.
